The Wachau – a holiday pleasure

Kissed by the sun

The Wachau belongs to the most popular regions in Austria. The agreeable climate, the wine, the apricots, the cultural treasures, the sports opportunities … find out for yourself what you like most about the Wachau. Enjoy the Wachau from its most beautiful side starting in Emmersdorf and combine cultural trips with marvellous bike tours and culinary experiences just as the fancy takes you.

Crowned by the UNESCO

The world heritage committee of the UN cultural organisation UNESCO has included the 36 kilometres long river valley between Krems and Melk in Lower Austria in the UNESCO World Heritage List as a cultural landscape.

“This short stretch of the river Danube – 36 km out of a total of 2,800 km – is unique” it says in the justification for the inclusion. Due to its diverse landscape structure, its important cultural monuments and small-town ensembles, this section of the Danube valley represents a historical cultural landscape of outstanding universal value.

Wineries which are known far beyond the borders

Because of the mild climate influenced by the Danube, the slopes ideally inclined towards the sun and the special quality of the ground, outstanding wines grow in the Wachau which are valued from connoisseurs all over the globe.

The wine spring festival, the GOURMETfestival, the wine autumn festival and the time of the apricot harvest are the most pleasant times of the year.

Cultural treasures of superb value

In almost every direction you can find cultural and historic highlights which you should not miss out on: Castles and fortresses such as Dürnstein or Aggstein, the world-known monastery in Melk, the Schallaburg, the basilica Maria Taferl or the Benedictine monastery Göttweig, to name only a few.

Doing sports in the Wachau

Sporty contemporaries can enjoy the Wachau during marvellous hikes, for example on the world heritage trail or on the Jakobsweg trail, cycle along the river Danube, run through vineyards or even participate in the Wachau Marathon. Your activities can easily be combined with a boat tour on the Danube.

The Wachau will excite you, no matter if from the bike saddle, the car seat, the boat or in your hiking boots. With its many sights it will be a hard choice what to do first. We will be happy to give you further tips and already look forward to your enquiry!
