The World Heritage Committee of the UN cultural organisation UNESCO has declared the 36 kilometre stretch of the Danube valley between Krems and Melk in Lower Austria as a World Cultural Heritage Site.
„This short stretch of the Danube – 36 Km from a total of 2800 km – is unique” as stated in the explanation for its inclusion in the list. Not only the varied landscapes, and the important cultural monuments but also the small town ensembles have given this part of the Danube lasting historical and cultural significance way beyond the borders of Austria.
The Danube is responsible for the mild climate, and the slopes well located for hours of sunshine as well as the special qualities of the soil have led to the Wachau being able to produce excellent wines which are appreciated by wine-lovers throughout the world.
Don't miss the numerous attractions of the Wachau, whether by bike, car or simply on foot.
